Obituary for Manuel Chavez Jr.
Manuel A. Chavez Jr., known as “Melito” by his family and close friends, age 58, and a resident of Belen, NM, was called home to be with our Lord on November 5, 2017. He was born to Manuel and Anna Chavez, on September 6, 1959, and raised in Torreon, NM. Manuel Attended Estancia High School and graduated salutatorian. As a young Child Manuel knew he wanted to be a teacher, often playing school with his younger siblings. He pursued his dreams of becoming an educator and received his Master’s degree in education at Eastern New Mexico State University. Manuel retired after serving 32 years as a teacher for the Reserve Public School District. He inspired a great many of his students and maintained loving friendships with them. Manuel has always had a deep love for his Catholic Faith, inspired by his parent’s great faith and love of the church. He was an active member of Immaculate Conception Parish in Tome, NM. Manuel attended daily mass and spent many hours with the Blessed Sacrament. He had a great love for his many nieces and nephews, lovingly known as his “Filthy Rodents”. Manuel fostered a love of learning in his nieces and nephews always giving them books as gifts. He spent so much of his time talking, encouraging, playing, and loving the children in his family. Manuel is preceded in death by his father, Manuel Chavez. He is survived by his loving mother, Anna Chavez; siblings, Gloria Ortega and husband, Mark, Charles Chavez and friend, Lorie, Theresa Chavez, Ted Chavez and wife, Carmen, Antonette Sisneros and husband, Phillip, and Leo Chavez and girlfriend, Susan; and his loving godchildren, Estevan, Charles Clay, and Samuel. Manuel Is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Estevan (Renee), Vicente (Candice), Leandra, Charles Clay, Casey, Leo Jr., Samuel, Anthony, Christopher, and Michaela and great nieces and nephews, Isabella, Julian, Abran, Enrique, and Katarina. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Services will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Tome, NM, on Saturday, November 11, 2017. A Viewing will begin at 8:30 a.m., with a Rosary to be recited at 9:30 a.m., and a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Tome Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers are his brothers Charles, Ted, and Leo; godsons, Estevan and Charles Clay; and nephew, Vicente. Honorary Pallbearer will be his godson, Samuel Chavez.
