Velma “Granny” Hardesty, age 81, a resident of Los Lunas, NM passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 21 surrounded by her loved ones. She was a member of Belen Christian Church. She was also an avid member of “Valencia Valley Quilters” and “Monday Set & Sew Club”.
Velma was retired from the State of New Mexico Los Lunas Hospital and Training School, Valencia County Sheriff’s Office and Eastern Valencia County Citizens Patrol and was commissioned “Granny” with the New Mexico Women’s Commission. Granny was an avid quilter who loved sharing her love of the art and her gifts with all her family and friends. She was a spirited outdoors woman, who loved to go out hunting and camping with her family every chance she had. She was always ready with words of encouragement and motivation…with a subtle reminder, a time or two, of who the best hunter was.
She was always full of adventure, never would hesitate to jump on the motorcycle or UTV with her grandsons, or go on a random road trip. Her family was her greatest pride and joy. There was never a missed opportunity to brag about the accomplishments of her children, grand children and great grandchildren. She truly loved each and every one of them.
She was preceded in death by her loving companion of 29 years, Johnnie Perea; sister, Thelma Smith; brother in law, Murrel Smith; and grandson, Turner Hardesty.
She is survived by her loving children, Ed and Scott Hardesty, Michelle and Tim Gallegos, Lori Hardesty, Ruben and Renee Perea, Leonard and Betty Perea, Ofelia and Johnny Diaz, Catherine and Pat Jojola, Tante, Berto and Johnnie Perea, Jr.; she was also blessed with 20 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren, who made her the Granny we all know, love and will forever miss in our hearts.
