Gilbert B. Ulivarri, “LaGila”, a resident of Belen, NM, passed away on the afternoon of April 14, 2018 at the age of 99, just weeks shy of his 100th birthday. Gila was a pillar of the community. He was a devout catholic and a lifelong member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps, and from there he went straight into the Army where he served during WWII in Africa, Sicily and Italy. Gila was known throughout the county as a man’s man of honesty and integrity. He worked at Becker Dallies until closing and from there worked for Valencia County where he retired. Gila played semi-pro baseball in the Valencia County League and was fortunate enough to play baseball with Joe DiMaggio in Europe. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Ventura “Bennie” (Sanchez) Ulivarri; father, Rafael Ulivarri; mother, Canuta Ulivarri; brothers, Daniel, Ernesto, Rosendo, and Narcisco Ulivarri; sister, Reina Ulivarri, and his great grandson, Kennan Korte. Gila is survived by his children, Gilbert Ulivarri Jr (Mary Esther) of Belen, Marie Korte (Alvin) of Las Vegas, NM, and Terese “Tinky” Ulivarri of Belen; brother, Ralph Ulivarri (Vivian) of Barstow, CA; grandchildren, Angela Trujillo (Raymond), Eric Ulivarri, Katherine Korte, William Korte (Kristina), and Richard Korte; great-grandchildren, Raymond Trujillo Jr., Rhianna Haskew (Casey), Khallen, Julian, Jonathan, and Rhianna Marie Korte; and great-great grandchildren, Terrence, Kaeshawn and baby (due Oct) Haskew. He is also survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews. If there’s a poker game in heaven you’re holding a “Royal Flush”. If there is a baseball game you just hit the walk off Home Run… and if you found your Harley… ride it into the sunset. All services will be held at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church, on Friday, April 20, 2018. A Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m., with a Rosary to be recited at 10:30 a.m., and a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens. The family will be having a reception following the Internment at the Parish Hall. Arrangements are being handled by the caring professionals at the Noblin Funeral Service Belen Chapel, 418 W.
