Obituary for Patsy Sue Hunter (Barker)

Patsy Sue Hunter (Barker)
Patsy Sue Hunter, age 81, a resident of Belen, NM, died peacefully in her sleep at home on Friday, January 5, 2018. She was born in Sulphur, OK, to the late V.T. and Nell Barker. She was married to the late C.W. (Woody) Hunter on January 31, 1953 in Dougherty, OK, at the home of her aunt and uncle, Bonnie and John Pinkston. They were married for 63 years at the time of Woody’s death in 2016.
They enjoyed working together to raise their four sons and many four-legged sons and daughters (horses) at their home in Belen. They built a life together that involved many hard-working hours and a home full of love and family activity. When their sons attended Belen High School, they spent many hours at their sporting events both in and out-of-town.

Patsy attended Doughtery High School in Oklahoma and she graduated Valedictorian in 1953. She was studious and took great pride in her scholastic achievements. After high school, she joined her husband on an Army base and began her life as a wife and a couple of years later, a mother. She spent many hours cooking delicious meals that were devoured by her four growing boys and husband. She loved her family very much and considered them her greatest achievement.

Patsy was a voracious reader and loved to buy books from the Belen Library. She especially loved to collect cookbooks and would sit for hours reading recipes. When her boys were in their teens, she took a job on the teller line at the First National Bank of Belen (now Wells Fargo) and made her way to Vice-President of bookkeeping. She was respected by all her colleagues and retired after over 20 years of service. After retirement, she worked part-time for her son, Jeff, at Performance Automotive and was his administrative right-hand for a number of years.

Patsy was preceded in death by her parents, V.T. and Nell Barker; her husband, Woody Hunter; her in-laws, Cecil and Edna Hunter; her brother, Gene Ray Barker (who passed at 6 mos); and her daughter-in-law, Judy Hunter.

Patsy is survived by her sister, Paula Weathersby; brother-in-law, Mickey Weathersby, and their two children, Lisa Mattox and Richard Weathersby; four sons, Woody Jr., Jeff Ray (Becky), Terry Dean (Yvonne) and Jerry Don (Hope); she is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Barbara Sue Jones, Melissa Lechuga , Jared Hunter, Janese Hunter, Jennifer Hunter-Power, Nikki Romero, Jacob Hunter, Jerry Hunter, Jr., Jessica Hunter and Jon Hunter; and 11 great-grandchildren, Hunter, Austin and Dakota Jones, Jayden and Jordon Lechuga, Brooklyn and Brennon Hunter, Kimberlee Power, Kennedy and Jackson Hunter and Sander Romero.

Per Patsy’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Services will be held on Friday, January 12 at First Baptist Church of Belen, 115 S. 4th street, with the family receiving friends at 10:00 AM. The memorial video will be played throughout the visitation. The Celebration of Patsy’s Life will begin at 11:00 AM. A reception will follow at the church hall. Arrangements are being handled by the caring professionals at the Noblin Funeral Service Belen Chapel, 418 W. Reinken Ave., (505)864-4448.
