Yerda Ruth Mason Payne was born on July 16, 1936, in Blackfoot, Idaho to Florence Hinckley Hoopes Mason and Herbert Spencer Mason. Ernie began his career with the Valley Ambulance Service, dedicating 10 years to serving his community. He then transitioned to the Valencia County Road Department, where he operated heavy equipment for 17 years.
