Obituary for Kimo Wall Sensei

Kimo Wall Sensei
There are few men in the history of Okinawan martial arts who have made the global impact of the great man Kimo Wall.

He shared tirelessly the arts of Kobudo and Karate around the world, just as they had been shown to him on the island of Okinawa in the 1960s.

Sensei Kimo Wall is considered by many to be one of the most respected western masters in Okinawan martial arts of all time. He exemplified the spirit and the techniques of the island's fighting traditions for over fifty years. He taught thousands of students the arts of Karate and Kobudo across the globe.

In Karate terms, he was one of only a handful of westerners to have trained under Higa Seiko at the Shodokan dojo. In Kobudo terms he was the very first Westerner to train with Matayoshi Shinpo. The two of whom became very close friends throughout the 1960s.

Kimo introduced the west to the techniques that would later become known as 'Matayoshi Kobudo', a term which we believe Kimo Wall himself created in the late 1960s.

In 1986 Matayoshi Shinpo presented Kimo with a 7th Dan in Kobudo. The highest grade he ever awarded to a non Okinawan. Kimo Sensei never accepted a higher grade, since it was not from his Master Matayoshi.

It has been said by many that he should have been honoured with master or grandmaster status. It may have never happened on paper, but in our hearts, we know that there are none more deserving.

Rest in Peace Kimo Sensei.

The MKAGB thanks you for all that you have done for our organisation by acting as our patron and advisor.

You leave the world a richer place for your influence. Okinawa owes you a debt of gratitude. Matayoshi Kobudo owes you a debt of gratitude.
