Obituary for Tom Bunker

Print
Thomas Allen Bunker, age 68, passed away on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at 3:57 a.m. It is with abundant joy that we make this announcement because Tom is now residing in his eternal home with Jesus. Those of us left behind grieve for our loss. Tom valued his family and friends more than anything. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Susan Kay Bunker, now residing in Los Lunas, NM. They were high school sweethearts and have kept the fire alive with each passing year. Tom is also survived by his two sons and their wives and families, Jonathan Thomas and Brenda Bunker of Clarksville, TN and Nicholas Richard and Laura Bunker of Redondo Beach, CA. Tom loved seeing and playing with his five grandchildren, Samir Eichner of Wurtzburg, GE; Gabriella and Jonathan of TN, Curtis and Gavin of CA. Tom was predeceased by his parents Richard Delbert Bunker and Delores Ethel (Nelson) Bunker of Edina, MN and his oldest brother, William Richard of Stafford, VA. He is survived by his brother, Robert Leslie, of San Francisco and sister, Diana Marie, of Minneapolis.
Tom was born and raised in Richfield, MN. He graduated with an NROTC Scholarship from the University of Minnesota with a BS in Business in 1972. His four-year NROTC commitment turned into a 28-year career in the US Navy Supply Corps. Along the way Tom acquired a Master’s Degree in Operations Research from the US Naval Post Graduate School. Tom retired at the rank of Captain having served in diverse fields such inventory control, finance, and software development. He was a gifted leader which showed up in every aspect of his life.
Tom’s final assignment with the Navy was in Mechanicsburg, PA where he retired in August 2000. Tom and Sue decided to put down roots there and Tom re-entered the workforce as the Chief Financial Officer for the charitable non-profit UCP of Central PA. He cherished his time with the people and the mission of UCP. He retired from UCP in August of 2014.
Tom and Sue were once stationed in Albuquerque, NM at Kirtland AFB in the mid-1980’s and fell in love with the desert Southwest. Upon their final retirement, they decided to move back to more sunshine and between their sons in Los Lunas, NM.
Tom was a skilled woodworker and avid hiker. He was always active in various ministries in his church in PA and now in NM at Calvary Chapel Rio Grande Valley. He and Sue have shared a life-long passion for honoring marriage as a God-given institution and spent many years in pre-marital counseling and Biblical teaching on marriage related issues.
Services will be held on Thursday, November 1, 2018 beginning with a visitation at 2:30 p.m. followed by the memorial service at 3:00 p.m. at Calvary Chapel Rio Grande Valley in Belen, NM.In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution in Tom’s name to Christ Quest Ministries, 3513 E.
