Obituary

The world lost an amazing, beautiful, human on Sunday, March 3, 2019. Virgil Kohlhepp was one of the nicest, funniest and most brilliant humans on the planet. He was loved by everyone and always had a huge smile on his face even though he was working so hard to save the world and make it a better place. His laugh was so infectious and lit up the world. The love he had with his wife was something that every fairy tale story would be based on. He will be sorely missed on this planet by everyone who was honored to come in contact with him. Virgil was a true genius and his contributions to society from life saving devices, space probes, and protecting our national security cannot be overstated.
Virgil, age 58, a resident of Peralta is survived by the love of his life and care-taker, Jenna Kohlhepp; Mother, Shirley Irvin; Laura Merrill and her husband, Mike; John Kohlhepp; Anne Steele and her husband, Mike; Jane Humphrey and her husband, Greg; nieces and nephews, Forrest Merrill, Mykel Cord, Molly Merrill, Chris Humphrey, Ian Merrill, Victoria Fitzgerald, Ryan Humphrey, Susannah Steele; 3 grand-nephews; 1 grand-niece; and many cousins with whom he was close.
No services are scheduled at this time. Arrangements are being handled by the caring professionals at the Noblin Funeral Service Los Lunas Chapel, 2211-D Main St., (505) 866-9992, where an online guest register is available at www.noblin.com.

My cousin Virg was brash, charming, inquisitive, brilliant, eccentric and lovable. He and I were two of the quintet of babies born into the Hetrick clan in 1960. In a day and age without seat belts, helmets or hovering parents, we happily smashed and crashed our way through childhood: walking railroad tracks, wading streams, experimenting with sparklers and cap-guns. In particular, I have fond memories of times spent at Parker Dam State Park (in Penna) with our grandparents & other cousins. One time, Virg wrote Edgar Allen Poe's poem, The Raven, from memory - in its entirety, on the wall of our rental cabin. That was a very Virgil sort of thing to do. Sadly, we didn't see each other much as adults. It had been my hope to someday relive a few of our childhood escapades, but Virg has gone on ahead, leaving us all too soon. I will think of him often, and miss him always. My deepest sympathy goes out to Jenna, to his close friends out west, and to all branches on the Irvin, Kohlhepp & Merrill family trees. - "Sony" (aka Sonya Sue Smith)

He cannot be replaced. He was born in DuBois, PA. Virg's teen years were spent in the Colorado Mountains. He appreciated nature and enjoyed the desert, the ocean and the mountains. He graduated from Purdue U. in the field of Electrical Engineering and pursued many courses in the other sciences. Virg read technical volumes for entertainment. He was an accomplished potter and a jewelry creator. Gifts of earrings and necklaces were given to many friends. Virgil was always ready to play a game or shoot at a target; he kept us all busy. He was a joy. His Mom

Ah Virgil, my big Brother, I am so lucky and honored to have watched you through life and shared so many experiences. Friends and loves have come and gone, but thankfully we have always been close. I have so many memories to keep reminiscing, but nothing will ease the pain of your loss. Thank you so much for all of your teaching, listening and love. It hurts so much to know you are gone. Who on earth will be able to answer all of my life’s high tech, space and bizarre questions? I love you Brother and not a day will go by that I won’t.
