Charles Edward Patterson, age 94, a resident of Belen, NM, passed away on Sunday, April 28, 2019. He was born in Carrizozo, NM to parents, William Thomas Patterson and Annie Lou Burr. Charles graduated form Vaughn High School in 1940. His career started in 1941 and he retired September 30, 1986. Charles first marriage was July 4, 1949 to Lucy Aguilar Patterson from Vaughn. He later divorced in 1964. His second marriage was April 5, 1965 to Erma Linda Jaramillo Bernal Patterson form Punta de Agua. He was widowed February 24, 2004.
Charles Edward Patterson was raised in Vaughn, NM in one of the first two houses that the town of Vaughn originally started with. He and his sister and his parents grew with the little town of Vaughn that would become a place where people would move to grow and thrive. Business’s opened up and opportunity came. A big part was the railroad. His father came from Kentucky and got a job with the railroad and put 34 years of service into it and when Charles graduated high school, he to added 43 years into that line of tough railroad men that made it what it was through history. Together started with the steam engines, father and son became known well and efforts of their relentless blood, sweat, and tears made a huge mark in history for the railroad and what it is today. He retired as a proud car inspector and was recognized for no accidents on the job but did witness and was involved in many tragic incidents that could wow the minds. His strong courage to get through tough nerve-wracking times would shock others. Charles was also recognized for never missing a day of work in 43 years except perhaps 2 days. Charles along with his family went through tough struggles and sadness and much happiness and adventure. No modern luxury to their start was ever known. Charles was a football player, swimmer, played the saxophone and was a boy scout. He also grew up with a Model-A car and had many as it was all there was to drive. He could build them from the ground up. His father taught him all about ranching and cattle and the slaughter of survival from them for food and drink. He had horses, pigs, chickens, dogs, and cats. His mother taught him to sew, chores, responsibility, and direction. He grew to be a strong courage’s tough resilient man with a joy in his heart. He was a craftsman who built furniture to perfection and could fix anything back together again. He was an immaculate perfectionist. Whatever he did he did well. His house and land was beautifully kept and he enjoyed his treasures. He loved to dance and celebrate and travel and he loved to eat his favorite chicken fried steak with gravy and enchiladas. He had many friends and admirers. He left his mark in history and left a gaping hole in the hearts of his family that he leaves behind. He will be missed and honored always as God leads him to Heaven where he will reunite with his family and friends waiting for him. Though his poor heart was worn and broken after 94 years it served him well and gave him love to give to others and a lesson to us all to fight till the bitter end and succeed in all we do for his faith in God, Gods will has come full circle and is now shining anew. He gave his best and his all. Freedom is your’s daddy go run, scream joy, and fly and smile as we catch your spirit from our days to come, we will be with you soon. Your sweet precious smile in life shall always be honored we love you forever more.

I miss you Charlie. I miss your oral history about Belen, Vaughn, and all of NM.
I miss seeing you in your wheelchair still trying to do yard work. I know it was difficult for you not puttering around the yard.
You were a meticulous scrapbooker. I never
could do such an excellent job as you did.
Shirley will eventually be fine. She is trying to do her best with the loss of your life.
You raised an independent daughter who learned what a son would have been taught by his father.
You did good Charlie!

My Daddy Mr. Charles E Patterson also grew up with the Model A car and he could build one from the ground up and could fix any car. He also made several scrapbooks before he left.
He was the best father.
