Maria (Amy) Larson, 82, of Los Lunas, New Mexico passed away on October 21 from complications of dilated cardiomyopathy. She was surrounded by family members. She was born September 17, 1937 in Socorro, New Mexico and was the 3 of five children raised by parents Ciriaco and Ramona Gonzales. She graduated from New Mexico State University with a degree in mathematics and worked at the Physical Science Laboratory in Las Cruces and later at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque where she met and married Wayne Larson, originally of Mahnomen, Minnesota. They raised 3 children (John, Karl, and Katrina) in the Los Lunas area. She was widowed in 2013 after 53 years of marriage. Amy was a pioneer for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics overcoming numerous obstacles with humility and resilience that was grounded in her Catholic faith. In order to spend more time with her family Amy gave up her job at Sandia and became a math/science teacher in Albuquerque which allowed her to inspire hundreds of New Mexico students to overcome their obstacles and pursue their dreams. Amy is survived by her siblings and their families (Ciriaco Gonzales of Rockville, MD; Josie Chavez of Taos, NM; Ralph Gonzales of Las Cruces, NM and Edwin Gonzales of Albuquerque, NM); her sons, son-in-law, daughter, daughters-in law (John and Lori Larson of Sandia Park, NM; Karl and Karen Larson of Tome, NM, and Katrina and Bob Mealey of Pullman, WA) as well as grandchildren (Jacob, Adam, Sierra, Bodie, Stephen), a granddaughter-in-law (Angie) and two great-grandchildren (June and Wayne). All services will be held at Tomé Immaculate Comception Catholic Church, on Monday, October 28, 2019. A Public Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., with a Funeral Mass to be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Tomé cemetery. Reception will follow at Tomé Immaculate Conception Hall.
