Mariano Chavez Sr., age 93, a resident of Belen, NM, passed away on Sunday, November 3, 2019, bon in Cuervo, N.M., June 20, 1926. Mariano was an honorable man, a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a decorated Serviceman and served in the U.S. Army as a medical aidman during WWII. Mariano’s time in the service took him to France and Rhineland Germany where he earned the Army of Occupation Medal, the Victory Ribbon, and the American Theater Ribbon with the Bronze Star. After his time in the service Mariano went to work for the State of New Mexico as a correctional officer. He was held hostage in the Santa Fe Prison riot in 1952. In spite of that Mariano went on to work for the corrections facility and gave 31+ years of service, He retired as on of the most dedicated” Inspirational and loyal” officers of his time. On April 6, 1983, in his honor for his service and dedication the visitation park at the Los Lunas Correctional Center was a renamed The Mariano Chavez Visitation Park. Mariano was a well known and revered member of the community and will be deeply missed.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife if 58 years, Josephine Abeyta Chavez; son, Louis Chaves; daughter, Patricia Chavez; and younger siblings, Lt. Col. Ramon Chavez, and Corinne Chavez.
Mariano is survived by his children, Pracilla Otero of Los Chavez, Mary Lou Pacheco of Los Lunas, Ramon Chavez of Veguita, Michael Chavez of Belen; sister, Cornelia Christy of Lubbock, TX; sister-in-law, Martha Jo Chavez; 9 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.
