Ross Maurice Pierce II, age 67, a resident of Los Lunas born July 29, 1952 passed away Monday, January 6, 2020. Ross enjoyed gardening; something he shared with his father. He had a strong bond with his roots, with decades of research into his genealogy, but his true passion was music. Self-taught, Ross got his first guitar at 12 years old and never looked back. He was a huge fan of the Beatles and B.B King. Ross, with his brother, Bob and friends, Bob and Charlie, formed the band Manta, but will be remembered for his years with Sagebrush and Next of Kin. Those who saw him play will remember his powerful voice, his guitar and most of all his love for performing, Ross was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Ross always enjoyed time spent with family. He was loved by all and made countless, long-lasting friendships throughout his lifetime. He is preceded in death by his father, Ross Maurice Pierce. Ross is survived by his mother, Michiko Masuda Pierce; wife of 47 years, Jacqueline Pierce; brothers, Bob Pierce and Glenn Pierce; sister, Michelle Pierce; sons, Aaron and Jeffery Pierce; daughter, Kerri Leyba; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Anton, Chrissy, Alyssa, Bradly, Andraumytha, Dexter, CJ, Levi; great-grandchildren, Annelycia, Avalene, Issac Jr., Lilyanna, and Jeremiah. I met Ross when he managed the 'Burger Chef' on Sunset blvd. in the South Valley in 1977. I was living a block away on Sunset when I first went to UNM. We became friends, because I'd go to the drive up fairly frequently, and he was always super friendly. Eventually, he saw my amplifier in the back of my truck, and asked if it was us he heard in the distance (one block or so)... which got us talking about music, and he wanted to join a band. We hit it off right away, and the other guys in the band really liked his guitar playing and singing. We got a drummer and played together for a few years until I left New Mexico. I remember how much I liked his songs, and we had lot's of amazing times together. We practiced a lot, and were a good band. I still live near and am friends with one of the other band members, Kurt Heinrich, and we've played his songs again and again through all these years. I got married and raised kids, and eventually re-connected with Ross through Facebook. We swapped tunes over the internet, as I had re-mastered recordings we made way back in Albuquerque in the late seventies. Then Kurt and I had cause to go to Phoenix, AZ about 5 years ago, and we stopped through Albq. and had a short reunion. Gosh, even at that time it had been 30+ years since I'd seen him in person. It was so fun to catch up again, and we continued to listen to each other's music periodically. I had (for years) enjoyed seeing videos of him playing with his various bands, and have a pretty extensive collection of his later music, and as I said, our own from the late seventies.

That's a bit of my story with Ross, but there's a lot more to say. Ross was an amazing man. He was always laughing, joking, and super friendly, though he was extremely energetic and worked really hard on his (and our) music. He would do anything for a friend, and he was really dedicated to his family. I've always had a deep respect for him as a human being. He was kind, and so very talented. His voice was so strong all of his life, and even in his later years, he could still hit those notes! All in all, since I first met him, he's been one of my most cherished friends, even when time got between us.

And lastly, it's so great to have all these recordings. I own a recording studio, and am a professional radio producer, sound engineer, and musician. I will be re-mastering what I have of our archive, and so down the line will be glad to share his music with anyone. Just let me know. Send me an email, and I will keep in contact for when this project is done. I'm sorry that it had to take his passing to think about it, but I'm so thankful that he left such a rich legacy of music. I would appreciate connections with anyone who played music with him, so I can round out what's available of his tapes and files. My name is Rich Reardin, and my email is please feel free to contact me.

What a wonderful story Rich. I am Ross’ sister in law Rosie. Ross would play Amarillo by Morning for me whenever we went to hear him play at the Post. I cannot find a copy of this recording, if you do have it I would love to have a copy. Please contact me when you have his recording put together. I would love to purchase a copy. Thank you.

My condolences to the family. I was blessed to be able to watch him perform many times. His voice was just amazing. I always requested Unchained Melody. You will be missed. I'm grateful to have known you. Sincerely, The Armijo Family
